Building A City/Town Curriculum Project

This art activity can be completed over several days or can be an ongoing activity for weeks and even months. As the town is “built” it becomes a vehicle for discussing different family structures, and gender stereotypes. The discussions can be either implicit or explicit, depending on the diversity that exists within the school community. If the school has children with LGBT parents, the children are likely to specify some of the families to reflect that. If the student population does not include any LGBT parents, then the teacher can lead the children to imagine and work within that possibility, as well as other family structures that might not exist in the school community.
